Jorge Castro Top Reviewer of the journal “Computers and Geotechnics” in 2022

Jorge Castro was awarded as Top Reviewer of the journal “Computers and Geotechnics” in 2022 in recognition of the significant contributions made to the quality of the journal. He receives this award for the third time (previuosly in 2020 and 2013-14).

On May 24, 2023, three full Professors (Jorge Castro, María del Mar de los Salmones and María del Carmen Ruíz Puente) and nine Senior Lecturers of the University of Cantabria (UC) have taken office at an event held in the Juan Jordá room of the University of Cantabria Government Pavilion and chaires by the rector, Ángel Pazos, accompanied by the secretary general, Silvia Tamayo.

César Sagaseta honorary member of SEMR

César Sagaseta receives the plaque commemorating his appointment as Honorary Member of the SEMR from its president Leandro Alejano.

The Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Rock Mechanics (SEMR) decided on February 15, 2023, unanimously, to appoint Prof. César Sagaseta Millán (University of Cantabria) as honorary member of the SEMR for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of Geotechnical Engineering and Rock Mechanics.

César Sagaseta has received the distinction of honorary member during the XX Annual Technical Conference of the SEMR, held on April 27, 2023.

Jon Justo’s Doctoral Thesis awarded by ANCI

Jon Justo Urrutia has received the ANCI 2022 second award for Doctoral Theses with the thesis entitled “Analysis of fracture of notched rocks under different load and temperature conditions using local criteria”, which was defended in December 2020 at the School of Civil Engineers of the University of Cantabria and supervised by Jorge Castro González and César Sagaseta Millán.

Jon Justo extraordinary doctoral award 2022 from the University of Cantabria

The University of Cantabria has awarded on January 27, 2023 the Extraordinary Doctorate Award 2022 to Jon Justo Urrutia for the thesis entitled “Analysis of fracture of notched rocks under different load and temperature conditions using local criteria” and supervised by the UC Professors Jorge Castro González and César Sagasesta Millán. The importance of this research, according to its author, is framed “in the context of the energy crisis in which we currently find ourselves, which further highlights the importance of this type of research to address the imperative need to seek efficient and economically viable energy alternatives.”

César Sagaseta honorary member of SEMSIG

At the XI National Symposium on Geotechnical Engineering, held from May 24 to 27, 2022, at the Mieres campus of the University of Oviedo, the Spanish Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (SEMSIG) awarded the honorary member plaque of the SEMSIG to César Sagaseta Millán. This distinction had been granted in 2020, but due to the pandemic crisis, the distinction ceremony had been postponed along with the celebration of the XI National Symposium.

Jon Justo SEMR award for the best research work in Rock Mechanics for Young Researchers

April 2022

The 9th SEMR Prize for the best research work in Rock Mechanics for Young Researchers has been awarded to Jon Justo Urrutia for the work “Analysis of fracture of notched rocks under different load and temperature conditions using local criteria”. This work constitutes his Doctoral Thesis, defended in December 2020 at the School of Civil Engineers of the University of Cantabria and supervised by Jorge Castro González and César Sagaseta Millán.

Jon Justo received the award during the XIX Technical conference of the SEMR held on April 28, 2022.

Almudena Da Costa takes office as Department director of the DCITYM of the UC

July 2021

On July 27, 2021, Almudena da Costa García took office as director of the Departament of Ground Engineering and Materials Science (DCITYM by its acronym in Spanish) of the University of Cantabria, in replacing of José Antonio Casado. The event took place in the Jordá Rector Board Room, without an audience, in compliance with the health restrictions established by COVID-19.

The rector of the UC, Ángel Pazos, chaired the ceremony and thanked the work developed by Almudena Da Costa, congratulating her for “taking the step ahead of assuming the leadership of the Department”. The Secretary General, Silvia Tamayo, also participated in the ceremony.

The Group of Geotechnical Engineering of the UC awarded by the most innovative research paper at the IX National Symposium of Slopes and Unstable Hillsides

The Group of Geotechnical Engineering of the UC has been distinguished for the most innovative research paper on the subject: “Correction, stabilization and environmental impact” at the IX National Symposium on Slopes and Unstable Hillsides, held in Santander between 27 and 30 June 2017. The title of the article is: “Slope stability remediation above a retaining pile wall at the toe of a natural slope” and the authors are Jorge Castro, Juan Casanueva, Jorge Cañizal, Almudena Da Costa and César Sagaseta.
